Setsima is a new weekly chat show presented by DJ Mac (Macaire Ndiaye). Each week, DJ Mac invites a new Seereer/Senegambian personality to chat about their life and work (similar to our old Cosaan Seereer programme). This show - which is broadcast in Wolof goes out every Saturday from 17:00 to 18:00 GMT. The Seereer version of this show is Kirinene Ngueelne - which is broadcast every Saturday from 16:00 to 17:00 GMT and presented by DJ Mac. Setsima follows the same format as Kirinene Ngueelne but in Wolof. DJ Mac can also be heard on Jeetaay which now goes out every Thursday from 21:00 GMT.
On this show, DJ Mac chats with Senegalese cultural entrepreneur and music producer Samba Diaité - the brains and artistic director behinds Senegal's first all female music band and instrumentalists "Orchestre Jigeen Ñi." DJ Mac also gets the opportunity to chat with the ladies of Orchestre Jigeen Ñi (some of whom the daughters of rather notable Senegalese artists) about their lives and work within the band. In the first section of this interview, Samba Diaité who is also the musical director and manager of the band discusses how he came to setup the band, and what inspired him to setup an all female band in conservative Senegal where previous roles such as drummer was reserved primary for men. The second part of the interview focused on the ladies where they gave us a rendition of their musical repertoire. The band was rehearsing in Dakar for an upcoming performance in Kaolack. The show is broadcast in Wolof and French.
