It is with great regret that the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio find themselves having to announce the passing of our colleague and old friend Professor Issa Laye Thiaw. Professor Issa Laye Thiaw, also known as Mbañik Caw (his Seereer name, Thiaw is spelled Caw in Seereer) was a brilliant historian and author, and a very proud Seereer and African. A true guardian of Seereer tradition, religion, culture and ethics. He was a gifted and wise man who was always generous with his knowledge and time. The Seereer Community, the Senegambian community, and Africa have lost a great man.
Following the passing of our colleague and uncle - Professor Issa Laye Thiaw on Sunday, 10th September 2017 in Senegal, The Seereer Resource Centre and Seereer Radio teams as well as Radio Ndef Leng Diourbel 96.4 FM came together to pay a special tribute to Professor Issa Laye Thiaw. This two hour tribute replaced the regular Open Mike programme usually presented by Mamadou Fall. Following his passing, The Seereer Centre, Seereer Radio, Seereer Heritage Press and their teams issued a joint tribute published on Seereer Radio's website. You can read the full tribute by visiting this link if you are using a computer or visiting this website (www.seereerpodcast.org). Alternatively, you can check the website links below or visit Seereer Radio's website (Schedule --> Presenters --> Obituary of Issa Laye Thiaw).
Professor Issa Laye Thiaw was not just a proud member of the SRC and Seereer Radio, but a family. We the Seereer and Senegambian community owe it to this great man to help support his works and family by buying his book La femme Seereer which is filled with great information as anyone who have read the book can attest to. We hope when the time comes for us to ask for the community's support in bringing to life the SRCTIW (The Seereer Resource Centre and The Temple of Initiated Women) project, the Seereer community, other Senegambians, Africans and those from the Diaspora will rally behind us and help us preserve the legacy of this man. For those who knew him, this project has been one of his best wishes that he wanted to give to the Seereer, Senegambian, African and those from the Diaspora who were separated from their motherland due to the horrible history of slavery. It is sad that he will not be here to witness the completion of this project, but we can unite and ensure that one of his greatest wishes comes to fruition.
The Seereer Resource Centre, Seereer Radio, Seereer Heritage Press, Tamsier Joof, Demba Sene, Mamadou Fall, Dimlé Sène and all team members of the SRC and Seereer Radio would like to offer their heartfelt and sincere condolences to his family and friends. This is a huge lost as expressed by colleagues.

Open Mike is a no-holds-barred talk show where you, the listener sets the agenda. Call the show and talk about anything and everything. Callers are not screened. Want to talk about politics, economics, history, social issues affecting the Seereer people of Senegal, Gambia or Mauritania? Whatever it is, call in and make yourself heard. You can also call in to request a shoutout or dedicate a song to family and friends, or to yourself. Why not? You deserve it. On this show, Tamsier Joof asks whether Seereer religion (A ƭat Roog) and other Traditional African religions are the object of scorn and prejudice in the Senegambia region and other parts of Africa, especially where people mostly follow the Abrahamic religions of Islam and Christianity?

On Saturday, 4th June 2016 and Sunday, 5th June 2016, the Seereer Resource Centre (SRC) and Seereer Radio's Cosaan Seereer team (Tamsier Joof and Demba Sene) attended the annual Xoy ceremony at Centre MALANGO in Fatick, Senegal. The Xoy is an annual divination ceremony where the Seereer high priests gather once a year before the rainy season to divine the future - mainly about weather conditions, politics and social issues. It is an important festival in the Seereer religious calendar. This is part 2 of the coverage of the Xoy - first broadcast on the Cosaan Seereer show on Saturday, 25th June 2016. Internet connection in Gambia was poor hence why the Cosaan Seereer show was cancelled on 11th June 2016 whilst Tamsier was in the Gambia. Following his return back to London, part 1 was broadcast on 18th June.
In this audio, the Seereer priestly class gathered to deliver their sermons and divine the future in Seereer. Ablie Bop of Walfadjri Radio translated in Wolof. The Xoy was a two day affair which lasted from 4th to 5th June 2016. If using a computer, the picture to the right is the Seereer star Yoonir (known as Seeseen in Saafi). On the second day of the festival, it was circled by the priestly class and delegations from various parts of Senegal where ritual offerings were made.
